…WHY PEDAL?
The VAP 4 was a more powerful engine than its predecessor, the VAP 3. Unlike many cycle-attachments, it will actually propel you uphill. Hence the ads proclaiming ‘Porquoi Pedaler’ (Why Pedal?), making fun of competitors, most of whose engines required pedal assistance on a gradient.
1951 VAP4 on Manufrance Hirondelle
The Manufrance was the preferred mount for the VAP4 engine. It certainly is both a handsome and a sturdily-built frame.
I like this machine a lot. It’s well restored and runs well; I paid a lot for it and it will not have a low reserve.
If it doesn’t sell, I’ll be taking it to shows this summer as part of the Cyclemaster Museum display.
The Flywheel cover was lost in transit when it was delivered to me, and another one is on its way to me. I’ll take some more photos when it’s fitted.
You can read more about this bike and about the Manufrance company on The Cyclemaster Museum website -
